Smart Forfour Battery Selection for Two Very Different Generations

The Smart Forfour name covers two unrelated four-seat hatchbacks: the front-engine 454 produced in the mid-2000s and the later rear-engine 453 developed alongside the Fortwo. Generation must come before engine selection.

Choose the model year, fuel and gearbox above. A 454 diesel and 453 EQ electric car have no useful battery fitment in common beyond the Forfour badge.

First-Generation 454 Petrol Engines

The original 454 uses a conventional front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout with several three- and four-cylinder petrol choices. Manual and automated transmission versions should be treated as distinct applications.

Use engine capacity and output rather than Pulse, Passion or BRABUS trim alone. Check the tray and terminal position because the first Forfour does not follow the packaging of a two-seat Smart.

Forfour 454 CDI and BRABUS Models

Diesel 454 cars use CDI power with glow-plug and compression-starting demands, while the BRABUS derivative has a high-output turbo petrol engine. These sit at opposite ends of the original Forfour range.

A diesel needs suitable cold-cranking performance, and a BRABUS should be identified explicitly. On either, measure voltage drop through ageing cables if turnover remains slow after charging.

Second-Generation 453 Rear-Engine Forfour

The second Forfour moved the engine beneath the rear luggage area and shares its basic architecture with the contemporary 453 Fortwo. Petrol engines include naturally aspirated and turbo versions with different power outputs.

Do not transfer a 454 listing to the later shape. The 453's battery location, network and charging control belong to a separate vehicle platform.

Manual, Twinamic and Start Stop Operation

Later petrol Forfours use manual or twinamic dual-clutch transmission, and applicable derivatives include Start Stop. Gearbox actuators and engine restarting both depend on clean low-voltage supply during busy urban driving.

Select twinamic in the catalogue and preserve any specified AGM or EFB construction. Apparent transmission faults after a flat battery should be reassessed once voltage and required adaptations are correct.

Smart EQ Forfour Auxiliary Battery

The EQ forfour replaces the rear petrol engine with electric drive and stores propulsion energy in a high-voltage traction pack. A smaller low-voltage battery still supports central locking, safety controllers, lighting and system initialisation.

A completed charge session does not test that auxiliary source. Routine replacement parts must never be confused with the traction battery or orange high-voltage wiring.

Four Doors, Rear Seats and Cabin Activity

Unlike the Fortwo, the Forfour is regularly loaded through four passenger doors and may spend longer open while child seats, shopping or luggage are arranged. Courtesy lights and body modules remain awake during the process.

Verify every door and tailgate switch after loading. One latch that fails to report closed can create an overnight drain in a car that otherwise starts normally.

Connectivity, Short Runs and Parked Accessories

Later Forfours can include phone-based navigation, multimedia and keyless functions, while trackers, USB adaptors or dash cameras may be added later. Frequent short trips provide little recovery time for these loads.

Disconnect accessories methodically and wait for the network to enter sleep mode before measuring parked current. Charge balance over a normal week is more informative than mileage alone.

Order the Correct Smart Forfour Battery

Identify 454 or 453 generation, then match petrol, CDI or EQ power and manual, automated or twinamic transmission to dimensions, terminals, base clamp, venting, Ah, CCA where relevant and specified chemistry.

See every Smart battery, or compare the two-seat Smart Fortwo battery page and Smart EQ range guide. Provide the VIN for BRABUS, twinamic or electric Forfour models.

HELP & ADVICE

Smart Forfour battery FAQs

How do I find the correct Smart Forfour battery?

Select the year, engine and fuel type in the finder above. Then compare the recommended battery dimensions, terminal layout and hold-down with the battery currently fitted.

Does my Smart Forfour need an AGM battery?

Some versions use AGM, particularly vehicles with Start/Stop, regenerative charging or higher electrical demand. Always replace AGM with AGM and do not downgrade the technology.

Can I replace an EFB battery with AGM?

An AGM upgrade may be suitable where the physical size, terminal layout and vehicle charging requirements are correct. Do not replace an AGM battery with EFB or standard technology.

Do I need to register the new battery?

Some vehicles use battery monitoring and energy-management systems that require the new battery to be registered or coded. Check the vehicle handbook or seek professional advice.

How long should a Smart Forfour battery last?

Battery life varies with journey type, temperature, electrical demand and charging condition. Frequent short trips and long periods without use can reduce service life.
