The right leisure battery depends on how you travel. Occasional stays with electric hook-up place different demands on a battery from several nights powering lights, pumps and other equipment away from mains electricity.
Choosing a leisure battery for your touring setup
Start with the battery specification recommended for your equipment. A higher Ah rating alone does not guarantee a suitable replacement: the battery must fit securely, connect correctly and work with every charging source installed.
- Voltage: match the electrical system and battery-bank arrangement.
- Capacity: compare Ah ratings at the same stated test rate where possible.
- Technology: confirm compatibility with the charger, solar controller and alternator charging system.
- Physical fit: check length, width, total height and the retaining method.
- Connections: match terminal type, polarity and position.
- Intended duty: choose a battery suitable for the way your auxiliary system is used.

How much leisure battery capacity do you need?
List the equipment you intend to run, its current draw and the hours it will operate between charges. Include lighting, water pumps, fans and other onboard loads, allowing for appliances that switch on and off.
A nominal 12V 100Ah battery represents approximately 1,200Wh of stored energy before discharge limits and losses. The usable amount depends on battery technology, condition, temperature and discharge rate. Inverters and other equipment also consume energy, so this calculation is a starting estimate rather than a runtime guarantee.
Increasing capacity may add size and weight or require changes to charging equipment. Check the complete installation before choosing a larger battery.
Can a car battery replace a leisure battery?
A starter battery mainly delivers a short burst of power to crank an engine. A leisure battery supplies auxiliary equipment over longer periods. Similar dimensions or a strong starting-current rating do not establish suitability for repeated leisure use.
For a motorhome, distinguish the engine-starting battery from the habitation battery before buying. They serve different circuits and may require different specifications.
Charging and storage between trips
Check that every charging source supports the replacement battery’s technology and bank voltage. This includes mains chargers, solar controllers and alternator charging equipment.
Recharge after use according to the manufacturer’s instructions. During storage, manage unwanted electrical loads and follow the recommended maintenance-charging schedule. Replacing a leisure battery bank
If your installation uses multiple batteries, confirm whether they are connected in series or parallel. Batteries working together should normally form a matched set. Avoid adding a new battery to a worn bank without checking the manufacturer’s recommendations and the condition of the existing units.
Check the cause of poor battery performance
Shorter runtime or repeated discharge can result from battery deterioration, but also from electrical drain, poor connections or unsuitable charging. Diagnose the system before replacing the battery.
