What does a flat battery actually mean?
A flat battery is a battery with insufficient stored energy to operate the vehicle or equipment properly. In a car, common signs include slow cranking, clicking when the key or start button is used, dim lights or electrical systems that do not operate.
The battery may still be serviceable after suitable charging. However, if it becomes flat again, the cause should be investigated rather than repeatedly replacing or jump-starting the battery.
What to do when your battery is flat
Check for an immediate safety problem
Do not charge, jump-start or continue using a battery that is leaking, cracked, badly swollen, giving off a strong smell, producing unusual heat or showing other obvious damage. Keep away from sparks and flames and seek professional advice.
Switch off unnecessary electrical equipment
Turn off lights, heated screens, chargers, dash cameras, radios and other accessories. This reduces the load and helps prevent further discharge.
Look for an obvious reason
Check whether lights or accessories were left on, whether the vehicle has only been used for short journeys, or whether it has stood unused for a long period.
Recharge using a suitable charger
Use a charger compatible with the battery technology and follow the battery, charger and vehicle manufacturer's instructions. Select the correct mode for standard flooded, EFB, AGM or other battery types where applicable.
Allow the battery to complete a proper charge
A short run or brief period on a charger may not restore a deeply discharged battery. Let a suitable smart charger complete its programme unless the manufacturer's instructions say otherwise.
Test the battery and charging system
If the battery does not recover, struggles again or quickly loses charge, arrange a proper battery and charging-system test. A simple voltage reading alone does not always prove that a battery can deliver the current required under load.
Why has my battery gone flat?
Lights or accessories left on
Interior lights, headlights, chargers and other equipment can continue drawing power while the engine is switched off.
Repeated short journeys
Starting uses a significant amount of energy. Very short journeys may not give the charging system enough time to replace it fully.
Vehicle left unused
Alarm systems, control modules and connected equipment may continue using a small amount of power while parked.

Do not rely on driving alone to recover a deeply flat battery
Driving may put some charge back into a battery, but it is not always an effective or controlled way to restore a deeply discharged battery. Vehicle charging systems are primarily designed to support the vehicle and maintain charge, not necessarily to recover every severely discharged battery.
A suitable mains-powered smart charger can usually provide a more controlled charge. Always follow the instructions for the vehicle, battery and charger, particularly on modern vehicles with battery monitoring or Start Stop systems.
A successful jump-start only shows that external power helped the vehicle start. It does not confirm the condition of the battery or explain why it became discharged.
What if my car has Start Stop?
Many Start Stop vehicles use AGM or EFB batteries and may include intelligent battery monitoring. The replacement should meet the vehicle manufacturer's required technology and specification. Fitting an unsuitable conventional battery can lead to poor performance and reduced service life.
Some vehicles also require battery registration, adaptation or coding after replacement. Check the vehicle manufacturer's procedure or use a competent technician.

Flat battery FAQs
Does a flat battery mean I need a new one?
No. A serviceable battery can become discharged because of lights being left on, infrequent use, short journeys or an external electrical problem. Charge and test it before deciding, unless the battery is visibly damaged or unsafe.
Why is my battery flat again after charging?
