Popular 663 and 664 commercial batteries
Lucas 663 and 664 batteries share the same principal specification and case size. The Lucas catalogue lists both as 12V 110Ah batteries with 750A EN cold-cranking performance and dimensions of approximately 345mm long, 175mm wide and 230mm high.
The important difference is terminal layout. Type 663 uses layout 0, while type 664 uses the opposite layout 1. When the terminals are facing you, this normally means the positive terminal is on the right for 663 and on the left for 664. Always confirm this against the product image and the battery being replaced.
A 664 is therefore not a performance upgrade from a 663. It is the mirrored-polarity version. Installing the wrong one can leave the vehicle cables unable to reach safely, and a battery must never be turned around or fitted with stretched or crossed cables simply to compensate.
Popular 655 and 656 commercial batteries
Lucas 655 and 656 batteries form another matched specification pair with opposite terminal layouts. The catalogue lists them as 12V 125Ah batteries with 720A EN starting performance and a case approximately 345mm long, 172mm wide and 285mm high.
Type 655 uses layout 0 and type 656 uses layout 1. As with the 663 and 664, choose between them by the position of the positive terminal and the vehicle's cable arrangement rather than by capacity.
The 655 and 656 cases are approximately 55mm taller than the 663 and 664 formats. That is a substantial difference beneath a battery cover, cab floor, seat base or body panel. Measure total height to the top of the terminals and check the original retaining system before ordering.
Why a higher Ah figure does not always mean more starting power
The 655 and 656 provide more stated capacity at 125Ah, yet the Lucas catalogue gives them a slightly lower CCA figure than the 110Ah 663 and 664. This is a useful reminder that Ah and CCA describe different characteristics.
- Amp-hours (Ah): indicate stored capacity under a defined test and help describe how long the battery can support an electrical demand.
- Cold cranking amps (CCA): indicate the ability to deliver high current for engine starting under defined cold conditions.
- Physical format: determines whether the battery fits the tray, clamp, cables and available height.
The correct commercial battery must satisfy all three requirements. Do not choose solely by the largest Ah number or assume that a physically larger battery is automatically the correct starting battery.
Which vehicles does this commercial collection cover?

Use a registration, VIN, chassis number or exact cross-reference where available and confirm the result against the battery already fitted.
Truck starting batteries and working duty
A commercial starting battery is designed to deliver the high current needed to crank the engine and then be recharged by the vehicle. Working vehicles can create additional demands through repeated stops, short journeys, warning beacons, communications equipment, cab lighting, tracking systems, hydraulic controls and body conversions.
If the vehicle regularly returns with a low state of charge, identify the cause rather than automatically fitting the highest-capacity battery that will enter the tray. The charging system, journey pattern and electrical load must be capable of returning the energy used.
Choosing a battery for a trailer
A trailer battery may have a different job from the truck's starting battery. Depending on the trailer, it may support a tail lift, hydraulic power pack, electric winch, powered ramps, lighting, tracking equipment, controls or other auxiliary systems. Some loads are brief and high-current; others operate for longer periods with the engine disconnected.
Before using a 663, 664, 655, 656 or any other commercial starter battery on a trailer, confirm that its battery technology and duty rating are suitable. An installation that repeatedly discharges the battery deeply may require a purpose-designed cyclic or dual-purpose battery instead of a conventional starter battery.
Also establish how the trailer battery is recharged. Charging may come from the towing vehicle, a dedicated DC-to-DC system, mains charger or another controlled source. Cable length, voltage drop, fuse protection and charging profile can determine whether the battery ever reaches a full charge. These system details should be checked by a competent vehicle electrician or trailer specialist.
Check whether the system is 12V or 24V
Many medium commercial vehicles use a single 12V battery, while others connect two matched 12V batteries to produce a 24V system. Some auxiliary systems may use two batteries in parallel to retain 12V while increasing available capacity.
Do not identify the system from the label on one battery alone. Trace the installation or use the vehicle manufacturer's information. Batteries working together as one bank should match in make, model, technology, capacity and age, and the complete system should be tested when one battery fails.
Dimensions, terminals and retaining systems
Measure battery length, width and total height and compare them with the individual Lucas product specification. Check the position and type of both terminals, the cable route, base or frame hold-down, side clearance and any protective cover.
A commercial battery must be secured against vehicle and trailer movement. It should remain upright, protected from conductive objects and installed with any required ventilation. Because these batteries are heavy, plan safe access and use appropriate lifting assistance.
Test the charging system before blaming the battery
Slow cranking, repeated flat batteries, dim electrical equipment or intermittent operation can indicate battery deterioration, but similar symptoms can be caused by loose terminals, corroded earths, damaged cables, alternator faults, excessive standby drain or an unsuitable trailer-charging arrangement.
Test the battery under load and check charging voltage at the battery while the relevant equipment is operating. On multi-battery installations, test each battery and the interconnecting cables. Correcting the underlying fault protects the replacement and reduces avoidable commercial downtime.
