Popular type 100, 096 and 110 van batteries
Types 100, 096 and 110 are among the most frequently encountered UK battery formats in vans, but they are not interchangeable:
- Type 100: commonly uses a lower-height case approximately 278mm long, 175mm wide and 175mm high.
- Type 096: uses a similar length and width but is normally taller at approximately 190mm.
- Type 110: uses a longer case of approximately 315–317mm while retaining the lower 175mm height.
Always use the exact dimensions stated on the individual product page and compare them with the vehicle's battery tray, retaining clamp, protective cover and terminal clearance. A battery that is only 15mm taller may still be unsuitable where it sits under a seat, floor panel or close-fitting cover.
How to choose the correct van battery
Start with our registration or vehicle finder and then inspect the existing battery. Compare every part of the specification before ordering:
- Battery technology: standard flooded, EFB or AGM.
- Voltage: normally 12V for the individual starting battery, but verify the complete installation.
- Capacity: compare the Ah rating required by the vehicle.
- Starting performance: meet the specified cold cranking amps rather than choosing from Ah alone.
- Dimensions: check length, width and total height carefully.
- Terminal layout: confirm positive-terminal position, terminal type and cable reach.
- Base hold-down: make sure the battery can be secured by the original retaining system.
- Quantity: establish whether the van has one starting battery, a twin-battery arrangement or a separate auxiliary battery.
Do not select a replacement solely because it is described as a van battery. Vans of the same model can use different batteries according to production date, engine, electrical equipment and factory option.
Ford Transit batteries
Ford Transit is one of the most common van battery enquiries, but there is no single battery that fits every Transit. Transit, Transit Custom and Transit Connect models span numerous generations, engines and electrical systems. Depending on the exact vehicle, fitment may include a conventional type 100, 096 or 110-style battery, an EFB or AGM Start/Stop battery, or more than one battery.
Use the registration number first and confirm the result against the existing installation. On vans with batteries beneath a seat or floor cover, case height and terminal clearance are particularly important. If two batteries are fitted, identify the function and specification of each battery rather than assuming they are identical.

Does my van need an EFB or AGM battery?
Modern Start/Stop vans place greater cycling demands on the battery than a conventional starting system. EFB and AGM batteries are engineered for these operating conditions and work with the vehicle's charging and energy-management strategy.
If the van was built with AGM, replace it with the correct AGM specification. If it was built with EFB, use the correct EFB or an approved AGM upgrade where the vehicle and fitment data explicitly permit it. Never downgrade AGM or EFB to a standard flooded starter battery.
Do not assume that an AGM or EFB product with a similar Ah figure is the physical equivalent of type 100 or 110. Common Start/Stop batteries can use the taller 190mm L3 or L4 cases, so both vehicle approval and available height must be checked.
Van battery replacement and battery management
Many newer vans monitor battery condition and charging through a battery-management system. After replacement, the new battery may need to be registered, reset or configured using appropriate diagnostic equipment so the vehicle can manage it correctly.
Professional installation is advisable where the battery is difficult to access, multiple batteries are fitted or diagnostic registration is required. Preserve vehicle settings only by using equipment and procedures approved for that vehicle; an improvised backup supply can create electrical or safety risks.
Single and twin-battery van installations
Some vans use two batteries for increased starting support or to separate starting and auxiliary electrical duties. The arrangement varies, and two batteries located together are not automatically the same specification or responsible for the same job.
Where two matched starting batteries operate as one system, they may need to be tested and replaced together to avoid imbalance. Where one battery is auxiliary, its technology and intended duty may differ from the starter battery. Identify the wiring and vehicle specification before replacing either one.
Why CCA matters for diesel vans
Cold cranking amps indicate the battery's ability to supply high starting current under defined cold conditions. This is particularly important for diesel vans, where the starter motor and pre-heating systems can impose a substantial demand.
A higher Ah rating does not automatically compensate for insufficient starting performance. The replacement should meet the vehicle manufacturer's capacity and CCA requirements while retaining the correct case, terminals and technology.
What shortens van battery life?
Frequent short journeys, repeated Start/Stop operation, long periods parked, cold weather and high accessory loads can leave a van battery below full charge. Dash cameras, trackers, interior lighting, refrigeration equipment, inverters and other conversions may add further demand.
If a replacement battery repeatedly becomes flat, test the charging system and check for an excessive parasitic drain. Installing a larger battery will not correct a defective alternator, damaged cable or unsuitable auxiliary installation.
Signs a van battery may need replacing
Slow cranking, intermittent starting, repeated low-voltage warnings, electrical systems resetting or a battery that will not retain charge can indicate deterioration. Similar symptoms can be caused by poor connections, starter faults, charging problems or an electrical drain.
Have the battery tested under load and check the charging system before ordering. Where the vehicle uses two batteries, test both and confirm their individual roles.
