Smart Fortwo Battery Selection Across Three Generations

The Smart Fortwo covers three generations of two-seat city car with turbo petrol, CDI diesel, mhd, BRABUS and electric power. Chassis code, engine and charging system are essential to the correct battery.

Enter the production year and full derivative above. A 450 CDI, 451 mhd and 453 EQ share the same compact idea but use different trays, connections and electrical strategies.

Fortwo 450 Petrol and CDI Models

The first-generation 450 began life under the City-Coupé name and was later marketed as the Fortwo. It includes small rear-mounted turbo petrol engines and the 0.8-litre CDI diesel, with Softip or Softouch transmission control.

State petrol or CDI and the exact year because early and late 450 applications can differ. On an older car, inspect the engine earth, terminal joints and battery restraint before copying the fitted unit.

Second-Generation 451 Petrol, CDI and mhd

The 451 Fortwo introduced a larger body with petrol and CDI choices, while selected petrol versions use micro hybrid drive, identified by the mhd badge. The mhd system automatically stops and restarts the engine using a belt-driven starter-generator.

A cycling-capable battery is important on mhd cars even when automatic stopping is unavailable. Confirm the exact engine output and retain the specified construction rather than choosing on dimensions alone.

Third-Generation 453 Petrol and Twinamic

Combustion 453 Fortwos use a later rear-engine platform with naturally aspirated or turbo petrol power. Manual transmission and the twinamic dual-clutch automatic appear according to derivative, including higher-output BRABUS versions.

Select manual or twinamic explicitly. Low voltage during wake-up can produce gearbox or stability messages, so test the common supply before individual control units are replaced.

BRABUS Fortwo and Added Performance Equipment

BRABUS Fortwos occur in more than one generation and combine higher-output engines with model-specific electronics and trim. Enthusiast examples may also have upgraded audio, gauges, trackers or alarm systems.

Quote the chassis generation as well as BRABUS during selection. Cars driven only at weekends may lose charge through time and accessories despite covering relatively low mileage.

Electric Drive and EQ Fortwo Low-Voltage Battery

Electric Fortwo models progressed from early electric drive versions to the EQ fortwo. Their high-voltage traction battery powers the motor, while a separate low-voltage battery operates locks, lighting, computers and the contactor sequence.

The standard replacement finder does not supply or repair the propulsion pack. A useful traction charge reading cannot prove auxiliary health, and high-voltage components require trained handling.

Rear-Engine Packaging and Correct Physical Fit

The Fortwo's unusual rear-engine layout means the service battery is packaged away from the engine and space is tightly controlled. Cable reach, terminal orientation, height and venting must all match the intended location.

Do not force in the largest case that appears possible. Secure the lower clamp and covers properly so a compact city car remains safe during sharp manoeuvres or braking.

Short Trips, Key Activity and Urban Storage

Fortwos often complete journeys of only a few miles, with repeated unlocking, cabin heating, demisting and phone charging. Some are parked for long periods because they serve as a second car or station vehicle.

Test state of charge separately from condition and move keys away during drain diagnosis. A suitable maintainer can support an intermittently used combustion Fortwo without masking a genuine parasitic load.

Confirm the Exact Smart Fortwo Battery

Match 450, 451 or 453 generation, then identify fuel, engine, gearbox, mhd, BRABUS or electric status. Check footprint, height, polarity, hold-down, venting, Ah, CCA where applicable and approved battery technology.

Browse the complete Smart battery range, or compare the four-seat Smart Forfour battery guide and electric-focused Smart EQ range battery page. Send the VIN if the derivative is uncertain.

HELP & ADVICE

Smart Fortwo battery FAQs

How do I find the correct Smart Fortwo battery?

Select the year, engine and fuel type in the finder above. Then compare the recommended battery dimensions, terminal layout and hold-down with the battery currently fitted.

Does my Smart Fortwo need an AGM battery?

Some versions use AGM, particularly vehicles with Start/Stop, regenerative charging or higher electrical demand. Always replace AGM with AGM and do not downgrade the technology.

Can I replace an EFB battery with AGM?

An AGM upgrade may be suitable where the physical size, terminal layout and vehicle charging requirements are correct. Do not replace an AGM battery with EFB or standard technology.

Do I need to register the new battery?

Some vehicles use battery monitoring and energy-management systems that require the new battery to be registered or coded. Check the vehicle handbook or seek professional advice.

How long should a Smart Fortwo battery last?

Battery life varies with journey type, temperature, electrical demand and charging condition. Frequent short trips and long periods without use can reduce service life.
