Smart EFB batteries
EFB batteries may be fitted to certain stop-start applications. If EFB is specified, replace it with the same technology or a manufacturer-approved upgrade.
Smart AGM batteries
Some Smart models require AGM technology for repeated restarts, intelligent charging and higher electrical demand. Where AGM is fitted, do not downgrade.
Smart EQ and electric vehicle 12V batteries
Electric Smart models use a high-voltage traction battery to power the vehicle, but they also rely on a separate 12V battery for locking, lighting, control units and electronics. This finder identifies the 12V battery, not the high-voltage traction battery.
A weak 12V battery can cause warning messages, access problems or prevent the vehicle from becoming ready, even when the main traction battery is charged.
Smart stop-start battery replacement
If your Smart automatically switches the engine off when stationary and restarts it when you move away, it will normally require an EFB or AGM battery. Replace the fitted technology like-for-like unless Smart specifies an approved alternative.

Does a Smart stop-start model need a special battery?
Usually yes. Smart stop-start vehicles commonly require EFB or AGM technology. Replace the battery like-for-like unless the manufacturer specifies an approved alternative.
Is the battery shown for a Smart EQ the main EV battery?
No. The finder is for the separate 12V battery, not the high-voltage traction battery that powers the car.
Can I replace a Smart AGM battery with a standard battery?
Normally no. If AGM is specified, fit an AGM replacement. A conventional battery may not cope with the charging strategy, stop-start operation or electrical demands of the vehicle.
