Smart City-Coupé Battery Selection for the Original 450
The Smart City-Coupé is the original short-wheelbase two-seater launched before the Fortwo name was adopted. This page focuses on early 450 cars rather than every later generation of Smart city model.
Choose the production year, petrol or CDI engine and transmission controls above. Registration data helps separate a genuine City-Coupé application from a later 450 already carrying Fortwo badging.
Early 599cc Turbo Petrol City-Coupé
Initial City-Coupé models use a rear-mounted 599cc turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine in different outputs. Engine management and the automated gearbox both require adequate voltage before cranking begins.
Select the exact year and power rating where available. The compact engine does not justify an underspecified battery, especially when the car is used only for brief journeys.
Later 698cc Petrol 450 Variants
As the 450 developed, later petrol versions moved to a 698cc turbo engine before or around the transition to Fortwo naming. Production date is therefore important when an advertisement or V5 description is inconsistent.
Use the VIN for a car near the changeover. Body panels can be swapped easily, so colour and external trim are poor guides to the electrical specification.
City-Coupé CDI Diesel Starting
The compact 0.8-litre CDI provides remarkable economy but adds glow-plug heating and high-compression starting. Its cold-weather CCA requirement should not be inferred from the neighbouring petrol model.
Test battery output, starter feed and engine earth together when a CDI turns slowly. A larger case cannot correct resistance hidden in an old cable joint.
Softip and Softouch Gear Selection
City-Coupé models use an automated manual gearbox, operated in Softip sequential mode and with Softouch automatic selection on equipped versions. Clutch and shift actuators need steady low voltage to establish gear position.
A flat-battery event can produce poor selection or lost adaptation symptoms. Restore a sound supply and follow the correct relearning procedure before fitting gearbox parts.
Compact Battery Compartment and Venting
The original 450 packages its battery beneath the passenger footwell area, making correct height, terminal layout and vent arrangement important. Covers must sit flat and cables must not be stretched.
Measure only as a cross-check because a previous replacement may be wrong. Secure the hold-down and refit protective panels so the unit cannot move in the cabin structure.
Ageing Control Modules and Moisture
City-Coupés are now older vehicles and can suffer from damp connections, tired grounds, failing switches or historic alarm and stereo work. Any of these can create intermittent drain or voltage-sensitive faults.
Inspect for moisture and document added wiring before replacing the battery. Wait for control units to sleep fully when checking current, as an open door will distort the result.
Urban Trips and Long-Term Parking
The City-Coupé was designed for dense urban use, where repeated cold starts and journeys of only a few miles may never replenish the battery. Other examples now sit unused as collectible early Smarts.
A controlled recharge can separate simple depletion from capacity loss. Use a suitable maintainer for storage rather than relying on repeated boosts immediately before driving.
Order the Correct Smart City-Coupé Battery
Confirm early 450 identity, engine size, petrol or CDI fuel and Softip or Softouch equipment, then match dimensions, polarity, restraint, venting, Ah, CCA and approved battery type.
See all Smart batteries, or compare the later Smart Fortwo battery page and roof-opening Smart Cabrio battery guide. Provide the VIN for changeover-year City-Coupés.
