Volvo S60 Battery Selection Across Three Generations

The Volvo S60 spans three generations of compact executive saloon, from five-cylinder petrol and diesel cars to Polestar performance models, B-badged mild hybrids and T8 Recharge plug-in hybrids. Generation and engine are essential starting points.

Enter the registration and complete specification above. A first-generation S60 R, second-generation D4 Geartronic and third-generation T8 Polestar Engineered use very different starting loads, battery counts and safety procedures.

First-Generation 2.4, T5, D5 and S60 R

The original S60 uses Volvo's P2 platform with naturally aspirated and turbocharged five-cylinder petrol engines, D5 diesel and the high-performance S60 R with AWD. Manual and Geartronic transmissions plus several facelifts broaden its application list.

Select the actual engine and driveline, not an exterior trim badge. Older saloons should have their engine grounds, alarm siren and boot lighting checked because resistance or a hidden drain can imitate declining battery capacity.

Second-Generation D2-D5 and T3-T6 S60

The 2010 S60 launched with D3 and D5 five-cylinder diesels and T6 six-cylinder petrol power, then gained D2, D4 and downsized T3 to T5 engines as Drive-E technology arrived. Manual, Powershift and Geartronic combinations change by year.

Use engine code, output and gearbox to separate similarly badged cars. Diesel cold cranking needs the listed CCA, while a selector or Powershift complaint should be scanned with supported voltage before parts are replaced.

S60 Polestar and High-Output AWD Models

Factory S60 Polestar models evolved from a six-cylinder turbo engine to a four-cylinder twin-charged powertrain, both with AWD and performance chassis electronics. Polestar optimisation on a regular S60 is not identical to the complete limited-production model.

Confirm genuine derivative and build year through the VIN. Trackers, audio amplifiers and tuning equipment should be included in a rest-current test, especially when a performance saloon spends weeks between drives.

S60 Start Stop and Dual 12V Supplies

Many second-generation Start Stop S60s use an uprated starter battery plus a smaller 12V support battery. The compact unit helps the car restart and maintain electronics while the main engine is deliberately stopped.

A support-battery warning should not trigger purchase of another full-size case. Test each battery at its own terminals, respect Volvo's charging-earth instructions and replace with the original AGM or EFB grade for the gearbox and model year.

Third-Generation SPA S60 Petrol and T8 Plug-in Hybrid

The third-generation S60 moved to the SPA platform and launched in the UK without a diesel engine, initially using T5 petrol and T8 Twin Engine plug-in power. Its networked safety, infotainment and chassis systems demand clean voltage during every startup and software procedure.

Do not map a second-generation T5 result onto the newer body. Specify SPA generation and output, and treat the T8 high-voltage traction system independently from the low-voltage battery that wakes it.

T8 Polestar Engineered and Recharge S60

T8 Polestar Engineered combines plug-in hybrid drive with upgraded suspension, brakes and software, while later Recharge-badged S60s received stronger rear electric drive and extended-range traction storage. These are not simply conventional S60s with a performance trim.

Quote Polestar Engineered or Recharge and production date. An external charge replenishes the propulsion pack, but it does not prove that the 12V supply can operate locks, computers and high-voltage contactors reliably.

B3, B4 and B5 Mild-Hybrid S60 Systems

B-badged third-generation S60s use a 48V lithium-ion battery, regenerative braking and an integrated starter-generator to assist their petrol engine. The separate 12V system continues to power ordinary vehicle electronics.

Never attach a booster or accessory to the 48V battery. Match the exact B designation, use regulated support for diagnostic work and keep replacement of the mild-hybrid pack within Volvo's trained service process.

Confirm the Right Volvo S60 Battery

Resolve generation, D or T engine, manual, Powershift or Geartronic, FWD or AWD and ordinary, Start Stop, factory Polestar, B mild-hybrid or T8 Twin Engine/Recharge identity. Compare case, height, posts, restraint, vent, Ah, CCA and technology.

HELP & ADVICE

Volvo S60 battery FAQs

How do I find the correct Volvo S60 battery?

Select the year, engine and fuel type in the finder above. Then compare the recommended battery dimensions, terminal layout and hold-down with the battery currently fitted.

Does my Volvo S60 need an AGM battery?

Some versions use AGM, particularly vehicles with Start/Stop, regenerative charging or higher electrical demand. Always replace AGM with AGM and do not downgrade the technology.

Can I replace an EFB battery with AGM?

An AGM upgrade may be suitable where the physical size, terminal layout and vehicle charging requirements are correct. Do not replace an AGM battery with EFB or standard technology.

Do I need to register the new battery?

Some vehicles use battery monitoring and energy-management systems that require the new battery to be registered or coded. Check the vehicle handbook or seek professional advice.

How long should a Volvo S60 battery last?

Battery life varies with journey type, temperature, electrical demand and charging condition. Frequent short trips and long periods without use can reduce service life.
