Which Hyundai Kona Battery Are You Replacing?

The Hyundai Kona is offered with petrol, diesel, mild-hybrid, self-charging hybrid and fully electric powertrains. The Kona N adds a high-performance petrol application, making the exact version more important than the shared body shape.

Enter the year and complete powertrain above. The finder must confirm a low-voltage fitment before a Lucas battery is ordered.

Petrol, Diesel and Kona N Models

Combustion-engined Konas include MPI and T-GDi petrol units, earlier CRDi diesels and the dedicated Kona N. Engine output, transmission, model year and Idle Stop equipment can change the battery specification.

Do not treat N Line styling as the same application as Kona N performance hardware. Choose the precise engine listing.

Kona Hybrid Low-Voltage Arrangements

The Kona Hybrid combines a petrol engine, electric motor and high-voltage traction battery. Its control units and conventional electrical equipment also need a low-voltage supply.

The layout can differ by year, and some hybrid versions may use an integrated lithium-ion low-voltage section instead of a separate conventional battery. Use the vehicle manual and finder result rather than assuming an under-bonnet replacement exists.

Kona Electric Is Not a Starter-Battery Vehicle

Kona Electric uses a large traction battery to power its motor and a separate low-voltage system to wake computers, operate locks and connect the high-voltage components. It does not require a petrol or diesel starter battery.

Only select a Lucas auxiliary battery where Kona Electric compatibility is explicit. High-voltage traction-battery work requires trained technicians.

Why an EV Can Fail with Driving Range Remaining

A weak 12-volt supply can prevent an electric Kona entering ready mode even when its traction-battery display shows charge. Plugging in the vehicle does not restore capacity lost through age inside the auxiliary battery.

Test the low-voltage battery and DC-to-DC charging path independently from the propulsion battery.

Urban Use, Connected Services and Storage

Kona models often make short city journeys and can remain parked while alarms, keyless entry, telematics and accessories draw a small current. Electric versions produce no gradual slow-cranking warning as the auxiliary battery weakens.

A dash camera or tracker can accelerate discharge. Measure current only after all modules have completed their shutdown sequence.

Battery Symptoms by Powertrain

A petrol or diesel Kona may crank slowly or disable Idle Stop. Hybrid and electric models can instead show dark displays, charging-port problems, multiple warnings or refusal to enter ready mode.

These symptoms need testing because a control, charging or connection fault can resemble a failed battery.

Physical Fit and Technology

For a confirmed replaceable battery, check the case, clamp, terminal position, Ah, CCA and standard, EFB or AGM construction. Do not substitute a battery from another Kona powertrain because it fits the space.

Follow the correct power-down and reconnection procedure, especially on Hybrid and Electric models.

Confirm the Exact Kona

HELP & ADVICE

Hyundai Kona battery FAQs

How do I find the correct Hyundai Kona battery?

Select the year, engine and fuel type in the finder above. Then compare the recommended battery dimensions, terminal layout and hold-down with the battery currently fitted.

Does my Hyundai Kona need an AGM battery?

Some versions use AGM, particularly vehicles with Start/Stop, regenerative charging or higher electrical demand. Always replace AGM with AGM and do not downgrade the technology.

Can I replace an EFB battery with AGM?

An AGM upgrade may be suitable where the physical size, terminal layout and vehicle charging requirements are correct. Do not replace an AGM battery with EFB or standard technology.

Do I need to register the new battery?

Some vehicles use battery monitoring and energy-management systems that require the new battery to be registered or coded. Check the vehicle handbook or seek professional advice.

How long should a Hyundai Kona battery last?

Battery life varies with journey type, temperature, electrical demand and charging condition. Frequent short trips and long periods without use can reduce service life.
