Hyundai Ioniq Low-Voltage Battery Guide

The original Hyundai Ioniq was offered as a Hybrid, Plug-in Hybrid and fully Electric model. Although their body shape is similar, the three powertrains use different traction and low-voltage arrangements.

Select Ioniq rather than IONIQ 5 or IONIQ 6 in the finder, then choose the exact year and powertrain. The later numbered IONIQ models are separate vehicles.

Ioniq Hybrid Battery Architecture

The Ioniq Hybrid uses a petrol engine, electric motor and high-voltage traction battery. Some versions incorporate a lithium-ion 12-volt section within the hybrid battery assembly instead of using a conventional replaceable starter battery.

Where this design is fitted, a normal Lucas battery must not be substituted. Confirm the year and owner's manual before assuming there is a removable 12-volt unit.

The 12V Battery Reset Function

Certain Ioniq Hybrid models have a 12V Battery Reset button that reconnects the protected low-voltage supply after it has isolated itself. The feature is part of the vehicle's discharge protection.

It does not prove that a separate battery needs replacement and should be used only as described in the owner's manual. Repeated activation indicates that the cause of discharge needs investigation.

Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid

The Plug-in Hybrid has a larger traction battery that can be charged from the mains while retaining a petrol engine for longer journeys. Its low-voltage system remains responsible for waking computers and enabling ready mode.

Charging the traction battery does not automatically repair lost low-voltage capacity. Test the systems separately and follow the PHEV-specific service procedure.

Ioniq Electric Auxiliary Battery

The fully Electric Ioniq has no combustion-engine starter. Its 12-volt auxiliary battery supports locks, lighting, screens and the contactors that connect the high-voltage traction system.

A depleted auxiliary battery can leave the car unable to enter ready mode even when driving range remains. Only choose a Lucas battery when compatibility with the Electric version is explicit.

High-Voltage Batteries Are Not Covered Here

The traction battery propels the Hybrid, Plug-in or Electric Ioniq and operates at dangerous voltage. Products returned for a low-voltage application are not replacements for this high-voltage assembly.

Traction-battery diagnosis, isolation and repair require trained technicians and approved equipment.

Storage and Parked Electrical Loads

An Ioniq can remain parked while alarms, telematics, keyless systems and aftermarket accessories draw power. Electric driving can also conceal a weakening auxiliary battery because there is no conventional cranking sound.

If discharge recurs, test current only after all modules have shut down. Dash cameras and trackers are common causes of added parked load.

Low-Voltage Symptoms

Possible signs include failed remote unlocking, dark or resetting displays, multiple hybrid warnings, a charge-port mechanism that will not respond or refusal to enter ready mode.

Check low-voltage state, connections and DC-to-DC charging before assuming the high-voltage system has failed.

Confirm Before Replacement

For a version with a replaceable auxiliary battery, verify the exact technology, case, terminals and rating. Follow the model-specific shutdown and reconnection instructions.

Browse our Hyundai battery range, or compare the Hyundai Kona battery page for another electrified model.

Send the registration and powertrain through live chat so our specialists can confirm whether your Ioniq has a compatible replaceable Lucas low-voltage battery.

HELP & ADVICE

Hyundai Ioniq battery FAQs

How do I find the correct Hyundai Ioniq battery?

Select the year, engine and fuel type in the finder above. Then compare the recommended battery dimensions, terminal layout and hold-down with the battery currently fitted.

Does my Hyundai Ioniq need an AGM battery?

Some versions use AGM, particularly vehicles with Start/Stop, regenerative charging or higher electrical demand. Always replace AGM with AGM and do not downgrade the technology.

Can I replace an EFB battery with AGM?

An AGM upgrade may be suitable where the physical size, terminal layout and vehicle charging requirements are correct. Do not replace an AGM battery with EFB or standard technology.

Do I need to register the new battery?

Some vehicles use battery monitoring and energy-management systems that require the new battery to be registered or coded. Check the vehicle handbook or seek professional advice.

How long should a Hyundai Ioniq battery last?

Battery life varies with journey type, temperature, electrical demand and charging condition. Frequent short trips and long periods without use can reduce service life.
