Volkswagen Caddy Battery Selection Across Five Generations

The Volkswagen Caddy has changed from a Golf-derived pick-up into a compact panel van, family MPV and plug-in hybrid Cargo range over five generations. Engine, wheelbase, body, commercial conversion and powertrain must all be known before selecting a battery.

Enter the registration and full version above. A first-generation pick-up, Polo-derived 1.9 SDI van, fourth-generation Caddy Maxi 2.0 TDI and fifth-generation Cargo eHybrid are not interchangeable applications.

First-Generation Golf-Based Caddy Pick-up

The original Caddy used Golf Mk1 underpinnings beneath a compact pick-up body, with petrol and diesel engines varying by market. Surviving UK vehicles may be restored classics, imported examples or working trucks with decades of electrical modifications.

Establish engine and country of origin, then inspect tray, clamp and cables directly. Winch feeds, tow electrics and replacement alternators can make the currently fitted unit a poor guide to the correct post layout and case height.

Second-Generation Polo-Derived Caddy Van

The mid-1990s second generation was a small high-roof van related to the Polo and SEAT Inca, commonly found with 1.9 SDI or TDI diesel and selected petrol engines. Its compact starting system differs from the larger Caddy that replaced it in 2004.

Choose SDI or TDI explicitly and confirm engine output where possible. Cargo lights, rear-door switches and aftermarket immobilisers are frequent drain suspects, especially when a delivery van completes many short runs but little sustained charging.

Third-Generation Caddy, Caddy Life and Maxi

The 2004 Caddy adopted a larger Touran-related platform and appeared as panel van, passenger Caddy Life and later long-wheelbase Maxi. Petrol, 1.9 TDI and 2.0 SDI or TDI choices evolved through the generation, with manual and DSG transmissions available by derivative.

State body length, passenger or commercial use and engine code. A Maxi conversion may carry rear heating, wheelchair equipment or refrigeration controls that should be isolated separately from the starter-battery circuit during diagnosis.

Fourth-Generation TSI, 2.0 TDI and Start Stop

The 2015 Caddy update is often treated as a fourth generation and introduced a revised body, newer TSI petrol engines and a 2.0 TDI diesel range. Start Stop, BlueMotion Technology, DSG and 4MOTION combinations create application differences hidden beneath similar cargo bodies.

Record transmission and driven wheels as well as engine output. Preserve AGM or EFB where listed, use the designated charging points and adapt the replacement so managed alternator control starts with accurate battery-age information.

Fifth-Generation Caddy Cargo and Passenger Models

The fifth-generation Caddy moved to the MQB evo platform with a digital cockpit and modern assistance systems. Cargo, Kombi, passenger and Maxi derivatives use 1.5 TSI petrol or 2.0 TDI diesel power with manual or DSG options according to specification.

Do not transfer a fourth-generation result based only on a 2.0 TDI badge. Use build date, wheelbase, seats and gearbox, and support low-voltage supply during control-unit updates so loading or door modules do not interrupt programming.

Caddy Cargo eHybrid Plug-in Powertrain

Caddy eHybrid combines a 1.5 TSI petrol engine, electric motor, DSG and rechargeable traction battery, and is available in commercial forms including Cargo. It can complete many urban routes electrically while retaining petrol range for longer work.

The high-voltage pack is not the ordinary service battery returned by the finder. Low-voltage power still wakes locks, computers and contactors, so state eHybrid and keep routine boosters away from orange cabling and marked isolation points.

Multi-Drop Work, Sliding Doors and Auxiliary Equipment

Caddys spend their lives opening sliding and rear doors, powering cargo lamps and restarting between nearby calls. Trackers, dash cameras, payment terminals, coolers and shelving lights can remain connected throughout lunch breaks or overnight parking.

Latch every door and allow telematics to sleep before measuring drain. Where a conversion has a second battery or DC-DC charger, document which supply starts the engine and test each branch rather than replacing both blindly.

Order the Correct Volkswagen Caddy Battery

Identify Caddy generation, pick-up, panel, Cargo, Kombi, Life or Maxi body, petrol, SDI, TSI or TDI engine, manual or DSG, FWD or 4MOTION and Start Stop or eHybrid system. Match size, posts, polarity, restraint, venting, Ah, CCA and chemistry.

Browse every Volkswagen battery, or compare the larger Volkswagen Transporter guide. Owners of related passenger vehicles can also see the Volkswagen Touran page. Quote the VIN and conversion equipment for working Caddys.

HELP & ADVICE

Volkswagen Caddy battery FAQs

How do I find the correct Volkswagen Caddy battery?

Select the year, engine and fuel type in the finder above. Then compare the recommended battery dimensions, terminal layout and hold-down with the battery currently fitted.

Does my Volkswagen Caddy need an AGM battery?

Some versions use AGM, particularly vehicles with Start/Stop, regenerative charging or higher electrical demand. Always replace AGM with AGM and do not downgrade the technology.

Can I replace an EFB battery with AGM?

An AGM upgrade may be suitable where the physical size, terminal layout and vehicle charging requirements are correct. Do not replace an AGM battery with EFB or standard technology.

Do I need to register the new battery?

Some vehicles use battery monitoring and energy-management systems that require the new battery to be registered or coded. Check the vehicle handbook or seek professional advice.

How long should a Volkswagen Caddy battery last?

Battery life varies with journey type, temperature, electrical demand and charging condition. Frequent short trips and long periods without use can reduce service life.
