Subaru Impreza Battery Selection Across Six Generations

The Subaru Impreza has appeared as a saloon, hatchback and estate across six generations, with ordinary petrol, turbo performance, Boxer diesel and selected hybrid variants. Year and engine must lead the lookup.

Enter the chassis generation, body and transmission above. A first-generation wagon, third-generation diesel hatch and modern Global Platform model do not share a universal battery.

Early GC, GF and GD Petrol Imprezas

First- and second-generation Imprezas include several naturally aspirated flat-four petrol engines across saloon and estate bodies. Manual and automatic versions, plus front- or all-wheel drive in some markets, create catalogue branches.

Check the engine code and import history because body panels or badges are often changed. On older examples, inspect the main grounds and alarm wiring before accepting the fitted case as correct.

Turbo, WRX and STI-Era Impreza Models

Earlier WRX and STI performance cars were part of the Impreza family, using turbocharged Boxer engines and all-wheel drive. Later WRX models became a separate line, so model year determines which page and fitment apply.

Identify standard Impreza, WRX or STI explicitly. Modified fuel pumps, gauges, audio and security equipment can alter parked draw without changing the factory tray dimensions.

Hatchback, Saloon and Boxer Diesel Generations

Third- and fourth-generation ranges include five-door hatchbacks, four-door saloons and the European Boxer diesel. The diesel's preheating and compression starting need more CCA than a comparable petrol hatch.

Select body and fuel together, then confirm manual or Lineartronic where applicable. Slow diesel turnover warrants cable voltage-drop testing as well as a battery load test.

Fifth- and Sixth-Generation Impreza Technology

The fifth-generation introduced Subaru Global Platform construction, while the sixth continues the Impreza as a modern five-door hatch in several markets. EyeSight, multimedia and extensive safety electronics rely on clean startup voltage.

Market specification matters because engine, drive and hybrid availability differ outside the UK. Use the VIN for a grey import rather than applying a familiar domestic result.

Impreza Hybrid and e-Boxer Variants

Selected markets received Impreza hybrid or e-Boxer derivatives that combine a petrol Boxer engine, electric assistance and a high-voltage energy store. They retain low-voltage batteries for the wider vehicle network.

The standard finder is not for the hybrid traction pack. Name the hybrid type and diagnosed voltage system before ordering or disconnecting components.

Symmetrical AWD and Transmission Electronics

Most UK Imprezas use Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, with manual, conventional automatic or Lineartronic transmission depending on generation. ABS, centre-drive and gearbox controllers all wake before road speed is available.

Grouped traction or transmission warnings after weak cranking may share one supply event. Support voltage and record codes before replacing sensors.

Daily Commuting, Dash Cameras and Keyless Activity

Imprezas commonly serve as daily family or commuter cars, where short journeys combine demisting, heated equipment and phone charging. Performance examples may instead sit idle with alarms and trackers active.

Assess the actual usage pattern and allow the car to sleep fully before testing current. Disconnect aftermarket devices methodically so the source of a drain remains traceable.

Confirm the Exact Subaru Impreza Battery

Match generation, body, engine, fuel, transmission, AWD and hybrid status to length, width, height, terminal layout, restraint, venting, Ah, CCA and specified battery technology.

Browse the complete Subaru battery collection, or compare the performance-focused Subaru WRX battery guide and crossover Subaru XV battery page. Send the VIN for imports, turbo or hybrid Imprezas.

HELP & ADVICE

Subaru Impreza battery FAQs

How do I find the correct Subaru Impreza battery?

Select the year, engine and fuel type in the finder above. Then compare the recommended battery dimensions, terminal layout and hold-down with the battery currently fitted.

Does my Subaru Impreza need an AGM battery?

Some versions use AGM, particularly vehicles with Start/Stop, regenerative charging or higher electrical demand. Always replace AGM with AGM and do not downgrade the technology.

Can I replace an EFB battery with AGM?

An AGM upgrade may be suitable where the physical size, terminal layout and vehicle charging requirements are correct. Do not replace an AGM battery with EFB or standard technology.

Do I need to register the new battery?

Some vehicles use battery monitoring and energy-management systems that require the new battery to be registered or coded. Check the vehicle handbook or seek professional advice.

How long should a Subaru Impreza battery last?

Battery life varies with journey type, temperature, electrical demand and charging condition. Frequent short trips and long periods without use can reduce service life.
