Mercedes Vito Battery Selection for Work and Passenger Vans
The Mercedes-Benz Vito spans W639 and W447 generations in Panel Van, Crew Van and Tourer forms, with diesel, occasional petrol and eVito electric power. Battery duty varies with drivetrain and conversion.
Enter the year, engine, body length and vehicle type above. A taxi-specification Tourer and a basic delivery van should not be matched from the Vito name alone.
W639 CDI Diesel Starting
W639 CDI engines need strong cold-cranking output for glow plugs and compression starting. High mileage can add starter wear, cable resistance and alternator issues.
Test voltage under cranking load and inspect engine earths. A battery with higher CCA cannot overcome a failing starter connection.
W447 Diesel and Start Stop
Later W447 diesels use more advanced emissions control, safety electronics and Start Stop on applicable versions. They need the specified AGM or EFB cycling technology.
Disabling automatic stopping does not permit a conventional flooded replacement. Model year and output must be matched exactly.
Panel Van Daily Delivery Use
A delivery Vito may start dozens of times while doors, interior lamps, scanners and cab equipment remain active. Short routes can leave little time to replace the energy consumed.
Fleet batteries should be tested by state of health, not changed only after a roadside failure. Charging performance matters as much as capacity.
Tourer and Crew Van Passenger Loads
A Vito Tourer can seat multiple passengers and operate rear climate, powered doors, USB charging and entertainment. Crew Vans combine these demands with tools and load-space lighting.
Identify the body configuration and any factory rear electrical package. Passenger equipment can change reserve requirements.
Factory and Conversion Auxiliary Batteries
Vitos may use a second battery for auxiliary equipment, and camper or welfare conversions often add leisure batteries, split charging and inverters. These units are not automatically the engine-starting specification.
Map isolators and charging relays before replacement. A failed converter or leisure battery can pull down the starter system.
eVito Low-Voltage Auxiliary Power
The eVito has a high-voltage traction battery for propulsion and a separate low-voltage supply for locks, computers, lighting and contactor control. It has no conventional diesel starter battery.
A Lucas auxiliary listing cannot replace the drive battery or extend electric range. High-voltage work requires electric-van training.
Commercial Accessories and Parked Drain
Beacons, refrigeration controls, trackers, cameras and tail-lifts can remain connected after the route ends. Incorrectly switched equipment is a common cause of overnight discharge.
Measure sleep current with every conversion circuit considered. Fit dedicated protected supplies where equipment must operate while parked.
Confirm the Exact Vito Battery
Verify dimensions, terminal layout, hold-down, venting, Ah, CCA and battery chemistry for the stated position. Complete any required battery registration after fitting.
