Range Rover Sport Battery Matching by L320, L494 and L461

The Range Rover Sport combines heavy-duty 4x4 systems with performance-focused engines and electronics. L320, L494 and L461 generations use different battery layouts, charging strategies and support systems.

Enter the exact year, engine and derivative above. HSE, Autobiography, HST and SVR badges help identify equipment, but the complete powertrain is required for a reliable fitment.

L320 TDV6, TDV8 and Supercharged Engines

First-generation Sport models include TDV6 and TDV8 diesels plus naturally aspirated and supercharged petrol engines. Glow plugs or a large V8 starter can expose lost cranking capacity quickly in cold weather.

Check the original tray, cable reach and factory rating rather than selecting from the vehicle's size alone. Ageing earths and starter cables should be tested under load.

L494 Diesel and Petrol Applications

The aluminium-bodied L494 introduced newer SDV6, Ingenium and performance petrol combinations with more sophisticated battery monitoring. Model-year updates can change specifications within the same engine family.

A battery that fits an early diesel Sport should not be assumed correct for a facelift model. Match Ah, CCA and technology to the vehicle identification data.

SVR and High-Performance V8 Use

SVR and other high-output V8 models have distinct cranking and electrical demands. They may also be weekend vehicles that spend longer parked between energetic drives.

A compatible maintenance charger can protect state of charge during storage. Do not use a lower-rated diesel or entry-level fitment simply because its dimensions look similar.

Mild-Hybrid Range Rover Sport Systems

MHEV versions add a 48-volt battery and motor-generator to the low-voltage network. These energy stores are not interchangeable, even though both may influence startup messages.

Confirm the failed system through diagnostic testing. A conventional Lucas battery listing applies only to the specified low-voltage role.

PHEV Low Voltage and Ready Mode

A plug-in Range Rover Sport uses a high-voltage traction battery for electric assistance and range, while low voltage operates locks, modules and the contactors required for ready mode. Plugging in the vehicle is not proof of auxiliary-battery health.

Never use a starter-battery listing for traction-battery work. Follow the approved power-down procedure around all electrified components.

Dynamic Suspension, Brakes and Cabin Electronics

Electronic air suspension, active chassis systems, powered seating, Touch Pro or Pivi displays and climate controls all need stable voltage during wake-up. Low voltage can produce several apparently unrelated chassis messages at once.

Load-test the battery and inspect the main connections before diagnosing suspension compressors, transmission controllers or infotainment hardware separately.

Start Stop and Auxiliary Support Arrangements

Applicable Sports require the specified AGM or EFB technology for Start Stop and smart charging. Certain specifications may also contain a smaller support battery that must be identified independently.

Disabling automatic stopping does not permit a downgrade. If a new main battery does not clear the symptoms, test any auxiliary supply and confirm that registration was completed.

Final Sport Fitment Checks

Verify case size, base clamp, terminal orientation, venting, Ah, CCA and battery construction. Secure the unit for high cornering loads and rough-surface use, then perform the prescribed monitoring reset.

See the main Land Rover battery range, Range Rover battery page or Defender battery guide. Contact us with the VIN for an SVR, MHEV, PHEV or twin-battery Sport.

HELP & ADVICE

Land Rover Range Rover Sport battery FAQs

How do I find the correct Land Rover Range Rover Sport battery?

Select the year, engine and fuel type in the finder above. Then compare the recommended battery dimensions, terminal layout and hold-down with the battery currently fitted.

Does my Land Rover Range Rover Sport need an AGM battery?

Some versions use AGM, particularly vehicles with Start/Stop, regenerative charging or higher electrical demand. Always replace AGM with AGM and do not downgrade the technology.

Can I replace an EFB battery with AGM?

An AGM upgrade may be suitable where the physical size, terminal layout and vehicle charging requirements are correct. Do not replace an AGM battery with EFB or standard technology.

Do I need to register the new battery?

Some vehicles use battery monitoring and energy-management systems that require the new battery to be registered or coded. Check the vehicle handbook or seek professional advice.

How long should a Land Rover Range Rover Sport battery last?

Battery life varies with journey type, temperature, electrical demand and charging condition. Frequent short trips and long periods without use can reduce service life.
