Land Rover Discovery Battery Matching from 1 to 5
The Land Rover Discovery has progressed through five generations, from 200Tdi and 300Tdi utility-focused vehicles to TD5, TDV6, SDV6 and modern mild-hybrid family SUVs. The correct battery changes substantially across that history.
Choose the year, engine and generation above. Discovery Sport is a separate model with its own page and should not be selected from a full-size Discovery listing.
Discovery 1 Tdi and Petrol Models
Discovery 1 vehicles are now old enough to have replacement looms, winches, alarms and converted accessory wiring. Before increasing battery capacity, inspect the starter cables, chassis earths and alternator output.
V8 petrol and Tdi diesel applications have different cranking behaviour. Confirm polarity, tray size and terminal arrangement on the individual vehicle.
Discovery 2 TD5 Electrical Demands
The TD5's electronically controlled diesel system needs both adequate cranking speed and stable voltage for its engine management. Oil contamination, ageing earths or starter-cable resistance can complicate diagnosis.
A battery may show acceptable resting voltage yet collapse under the combined demand of preheating and cranking. Use a proper load test.
Discovery 3 and 4 TDV6 or SDV6
Discovery 3 and 4 models add air suspension, electronic parking brakes, Terrain Response and extensive cabin electronics to diesel starting demand. Their electrical systems are particularly sensitive to weak supply voltage.
Slow cranking, suspension warnings and transmission messages at the same startup may have one battery-related cause. Check CCA and cable condition before pursuing multiple faults.
Discovery 5 and Mild-Hybrid Powertrains
Later Discovery models use Ingenium and six-cylinder engines, with mild-hybrid technology on selected versions. A 48-volt energy store operates separately from the conventional low-voltage network.
Confirm which system requires service. A low-voltage Lucas battery does not replace the MHEV battery or motor-generator components.
Seven Seats, Air Suspension and Family Loading
Folding seats, powered tailgates, cabin lighting, climate control and entertainment can remain active while a seven-seat Discovery is loaded. Air suspension may also adjust height while the engine is stopped.
Repeated accessory use before a short journey reduces reserve. Low voltage can temporarily disable comfort or chassis features to protect starting ability.
Towing, Camping and Dual-Battery Conversions
Discoverys often tow caravans and carry fridges, radios or camping lights. Many owners add auxiliary batteries, split-charge systems or solar inputs that are not part of the factory starter-battery specification.
Identify aftermarket circuits before replacement and ensure they isolate correctly. A failed leisure battery or relay can pull down an otherwise healthy starter battery.
Start Stop and Battery Registration
Newer Discovery combustion models use Start Stop and intelligent charging, commonly requiring AGM or EFB technology. Switching the feature off does not justify fitting a conventional flooded unit.
Applicable vehicles need battery registration or a monitoring reset after installation. Verify alternator or charging-system output once the procedure is complete.
Confirm the Exact Discovery Fitment
Match dimensions, hold-down, polarity, terminal style, venting, Ah, CCA and battery construction. Secure heavy batteries firmly before towing or off-road use.
Browse the Land Rover battery range, or see the Discovery Sport battery and Defender battery guides. Send the VIN for a Discovery 5 MHEV or modified dual-battery vehicle.
