Audi A4 Batteries Across the B5 to B9 Generations

The Audi A4 has been produced for several decades in Saloon, Avant and allroad forms. Across that time, Audi has fitted everything from straightforward petrol engines to high-torque TDI diesels, quattro drivetrains and later mild-hybrid systems.

This variety means an Audi A4 battery must be matched to more than the model name. Select the production year, engine and fuel type in our finder to view the Lucas batteries suitable for your particular A4.

Identify Your Audi A4 Generation

The A4 is commonly identified by its B-generation code. Knowing the generation can help distinguish vehicles produced close to a model change:

  • A4 B5: The original generation, with relatively straightforward petrol and TDI diesel electrical systems.
  • A4 B6: Introduced new engine choices, quattro versions and a more advanced electrical platform.
  • A4 B7: Visually related to the B6 but fitted with revised FSI, TFSI and TDI engines.
  • A4 B8: A major platform change with intelligent battery monitoring and wider use of Start Stop.
  • A4 B9: Features more connected electronics, driver assistance and electrified engine technology on selected versions.

A battery from one generation should not be transferred to another based only on engine capacity. For example, different versions of the 2.0 TDI can require different case sizes, ratings and battery technologies.

A4 Saloon, Avant and allroad Batteries

The A4 Saloon and Avant may share battery specifications when their engines and drivetrains match, but this cannot be assumed for every version. Avant models are often fitted with additional convenience equipment, while the A4 allroad combines quattro with its own engine and equipment range.

Four-wheel drive does not identify the battery by itself. A quattro petrol, quattro diesel and front-wheel-drive A4 can each have a different starting requirement, even when registered during the same year.

TFSI and TDI Starting Requirements

TFSI petrol engines generally require less cold-cranking effort than an equivalent diesel, but later petrol models can have demanding energy-management systems. The battery must provide stable voltage for ignition, fuel control, infotainment and numerous electronic modules.

TDI versions need sufficient CCA output to operate the glow plugs and turn the engine in cold conditions. Larger diesels and models with extensive equipment may also require greater reserve capacity.

The S4 and RS4 have separate high-performance specifications and should not automatically be matched using a regular A4 battery recommendation. Select the exact model shown by the vehicle finder.

Start Stop Batteries on Later Audi A4 Models

Many B8 and B9 Audi A4 models use EFB or AGM batteries to support Start Stop and energy recuperation. These batteries are designed for repeated cycling and faster charge acceptance.

Check the original battery for an EFB or AGM marking. AGM must always be replaced with AGM, while EFB should only be replaced by the same technology or a suitable approved AGM upgrade.

Mild-Hybrid Audi A4 Batteries

Selected later A4 models use mild-hybrid technology in addition to the normal low-voltage system. These vehicles can contain more than one electrical energy source, with each battery performing a separate function.

A mild-hybrid battery is not interchangeable with the conventional 12-volt unit that operates the vehicle’s control modules, locks, lighting and other low-voltage equipment. Confirm which battery requires replacement before ordering.

Battery Position Can Vary

Battery location is not identical across every A4 generation and engine. Depending on the model, it may be positioned within the engine compartment, beneath trim or in the luggage area.

Where the battery is installed in an enclosed compartment, the correct venting connection must be retained. Its dimensions, terminal layout and base fixing also need to match so it can be safely secured.

Audi A4 Battery Registration

Many later A4 models use battery energy management to adjust charging according to battery age and condition. After replacement, the new battery should be registered or adapted through compatible diagnostic equipment where required.

Changing the Ah capacity or moving to a different battery technology may require additional coding. This allows the vehicle to use a charging profile appropriate for the newly installed battery.

Check the Existing A4 Battery

Compare the recommended replacement with the battery currently fitted, including its technology, measurements, Ah capacity, CCA output and terminal arrangement. Do not rely on a previous owner having installed the correct specification.

If your A4 falls near a generation change or is an allroad, quattro or mild-hybrid version, send the registration through live chat. We can check the complete vehicle details and help confirm the appropriate Lucas battery.

HELP & ADVICE

Audi A4 battery FAQs

How do I find the correct Audi A4 battery?

Select the year, engine and fuel type in the finder above. Then compare the recommended battery dimensions, terminal layout and hold-down with the battery currently fitted.

Does my Audi A4 need an AGM battery?

Some versions use AGM, particularly vehicles with Start/Stop, regenerative charging or higher electrical demand. Always replace AGM with AGM and do not downgrade the technology.

Can I replace an EFB battery with AGM?

An AGM upgrade may be suitable where the physical size, terminal layout and vehicle charging requirements are correct. Do not replace an AGM battery with EFB or standard technology.

Do I need to register the new battery?

Some vehicles use battery monitoring and energy-management systems that require the new battery to be registered or coded. Check the vehicle handbook or seek professional advice.

How long should a Audi A4 battery last?

Battery life varies with journey type, temperature, electrical demand and charging condition. Frequent short trips and long periods without use can reduce service life.
