Battery Guide for the Alfa Romeo 159

The Alfa Romeo 159 was produced as both a four-door Saloon and a Sportwagon, with a substantial choice of petrol and JTDM diesel engines. Battery specification is determined mainly by the engine and production year rather than the vehicle’s body style or trim level.

Use our finder to select the complete vehicle details and view suitable Lucas replacement batteries. This is particularly important for the 159 because its engine range extends from four-cylinder petrol models to powerful five-cylinder diesels and the 3.2-litre V6.

Petrol and Diesel 159 Batteries

Different engines require different levels of battery capacity and cold-cranking performance. The main Alfa Romeo 159 engine families include:

  • 1.8 MPI, 1.9 JTS and 2.2 JTS: Four-cylinder petrol models with specifications that can differ according to engine and production date.
  • 1.75 TBi: The later turbocharged petrol model, which should be searched separately from the earlier JTS engines.
  • 3.2 JTS V6: A larger petrol engine available in Q4 and other configurations that requires appropriately rated starting power.
  • 1.9 JTDM: Produced in different power outputs and engine configurations, including 8-valve and 16-valve versions.
  • 2.0 JTDM: A later diesel option with its own fitment information.
  • 2.4 JTDM: The five-cylinder diesel requires strong cold-cranking performance and should not be matched using a smaller diesel model.

159 Saloon and Sportwagon Fitment

The Saloon and Sportwagon may use the same battery where their engine and electrical specifications match, but body style alone cannot confirm compatibility. Equipment such as electric seats, navigation, upgraded audio and parking systems can alter the vehicle’s overall electrical demand.

Q4 four-wheel-drive and Q-Tronic automatic versions should always be searched using the exact engine and year. Do not assume that a battery listed for a similarly badged manual or front-wheel-drive 159 is automatically suitable.

Does the Alfa Romeo 159 Need a Start Stop Battery?

Many Alfa Romeo 159 models were produced before Start Stop became widely fitted and therefore use a conventional high-quality starter battery. This differs from newer Alfa Romeo vehicles that commonly require EFB or AGM technology.

The existing battery should still be inspected before ordering because specifications can differ between engines, countries and previous replacements. If EFB or AGM is clearly marked on the installed battery, confirm the original fitment before changing its technology.

Cold Starting a JTDM Diesel

The 159’s diesel engines place a considerable load on the battery during a cold start. Power is needed for the glow-plug system as well as the starter motor, making the CCA rating especially important during winter.

A battery with insufficient starting output may turn the engine slowly even when it appears fully charged. The larger 2.4 JTDM should always receive a battery capable of meeting the demands of its five-cylinder diesel engine.

When a 159 Battery Keeps Going Flat

As most 159s are now older vehicles, repeated battery discharge should not automatically be blamed on the battery itself. The alternator output, starter condition, earth connections and battery cables should also be checked.

Accessories or electronic modules that remain active after the car is locked can create a parasitic drain. If a new battery becomes flat after the 159 has been parked, the vehicle should be tested for an unwanted current draw rather than fitting another replacement.

Under-Bonnet Battery Fitment

The 159 battery sits within a defined engine-bay tray, so its case dimensions and base fitting must be correct. Check that the replacement will sit beneath any original cover and can be secured using the factory clamp.

Terminal orientation is equally important. The positive and negative leads should reach their terminals naturally, without being stretched across the battery or placed under tension. Compare the Ah capacity and CCA output as well as the external measurements.

Changing the Battery on a 159

Switch off the ignition and allow the car’s electrical systems to shut down before disconnecting the old battery. Following reconnection, settings such as the clock, electric windows or audio system may need to be restored or relearned.

The Alfa Romeo Brera and Spider share some components with the 159, but their battery fitment should not be assumed to be identical. Always search using the vehicle’s correct model and engine.

Check Your Alfa Romeo 159 Battery

Compare the finder recommendation with the battery already fitted, including its dimensions, capacity, starting output and terminal layout. If the label is missing or the engine version is unclear, send the registration through live chat and we will help identify the correct Lucas battery.

HELP & ADVICE

Alfa Romeo 159 battery FAQs

How do I find the correct Alfa Romeo 159 battery?

Select the year, engine and fuel type in the finder above. Then compare the recommended battery dimensions, terminal layout and hold-down with the battery currently fitted.

Does my Alfa Romeo 159 need an AGM battery?

Some versions use AGM, particularly vehicles with Start/Stop, regenerative charging or higher electrical demand. Always replace AGM with AGM and do not downgrade the technology.

Can I replace an EFB battery with AGM?

An AGM upgrade may be suitable where the physical size, terminal layout and vehicle charging requirements are correct. Do not replace an AGM battery with EFB or standard technology.

Do I need to register the new battery?

Some vehicles use battery monitoring and energy-management systems that require the new battery to be registered or coded. Check the vehicle handbook or seek professional advice.

How long should a Alfa Romeo 159 battery last?

Battery life varies with journey type, temperature, electrical demand and charging condition. Frequent short trips and long periods without use can reduce service life.
